Do Angels Wear Robes? (If They Do, What Type?)

Angles are spirit beings that are believed to be created by God for some particular purpose. In Christendom, there are nine hierarchies of Angel, and they all have different meanings.

So, in this post, I will be looking at the robe worn by these Angels; I know you must have seen paintings of Angels and how these Angels have been depicted. I will be looking at why they are represented with such robes and their significance.

So, Do Angels Wear Robes? Yes, they do wear robes in most traditional Christian mythography. In most Christian stories, Angels are never represented as pure spirits but as beings with features such as clothing. In the bible, the following verses allude to this fact:

  • Daniel 10: 5: Then I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and beheld a confident man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz.
  • Matthew 28:3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was white as snow.
  • Revelation 15:6: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.

The only exception to these is in the case of Cherub, that is, baby, winged Angels where they are shown naked or with very scanty clothing. So, Yes, angels wear robes!

What type of robes do Angels wear?

In Christian mythography, there are seven different classes of Angels and each of them has different ways of dressing.

The Cherub (Cherubim in plural) represents the highest ranks of Angels. Their initial duty was guiding the Garden of Eden. They are often associated with serving the will of God and performing divine duties.

In terms of dressing, they are often depicted as wearing a white robe (Like this one on Amazon). They are also shown to have wings. In some representations, they are also shown to have wings.

The seraphim are six-winged angels according to the book of Isaiah in the Bible. Their duty is to sit around God’s throne and exalt him continuously.

When angels in heaven appear to people, they are always surrounded by a bright and shining light. Their appearance is an indication of the divine wisdom that fills their minds and enlightens them with God’s glory. Thrones are depicted with white robes (Like this one on Amazon) shining so brightly like the Sun.

The dominion angels are a group of angelic beings in Christianity who help keep the world organized and functioning properly.

They show mercy to human beings, deliver justice to unjust situations, and assist other lower-ranked angels to perform their work well. Dominions are usually depicted as wearing a red robe with a sword in their right hand.

Virtues or Strongholds

These Angels are powerful Spirits of Motion, governing nature. They assist with miracles as well as assisting in the governance over Nature and motion.

Virtues or Strongholds Angels are powerful Spirits of Motion, governing nature. They assist with miracles as well as assisting in the governance over Nature and motion.

Virtues also put on long robes just like Dominion, the robes are red most of the time, and they also have wings at their back and a sword in their hand.

The powers are considered warrior angels, as they defend against evil and not only the cosmos but also humanity. Powers Angels are also called Authority; typically to their functions, powers are depicted to be fierce with their red and golden robes, wings, armor, and sword.

Principalities are the angels that guide and protect nations, or groups of peoples, and institutions such as the Church,” according to Thomas Aquinas. Principalities also keep track of history’s high points in order for us humans not to forget our past mistakes.

The most distinguishing feature for them is their scepter. They equally wear red robes and carry swords to show their readiness for battle.

In Abrahamic religions, an archangel is a high-ranking angel that has command over other angels and the power to guide or change events on Earth.

However, these beings can also be found in non-Abrahamic faiths such as Hinduism and Buddhism where they are known by different names but have very similar functions. Archangels are always dressed for war.

They wear their robe complete with armor, scepter, shield, and sword. In the bible, three of them were mentioned. They are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

Why are Angels always shown as wearing white robes?

In many religions, white is a symbol of purity. Hence, Angels which are considered good are shown to be wearing white while the bad ones are shown to be wearing black.

Good Angles are those who are loyal to God. They are divided into three Seraphim, Cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, principalities,  ArchAngels, and Angels.

Angels can also be clothed in other colors depending on what they stand for. For instance, when an angel is clothed in blue, it signifies power, courage, strength, and faith.

An Angel wearing pink shows peace and love. Yellow is a sign that the Angel is there to assist you to decide something as this color is a symbol of wisdom for wise decisions.

White as you must have known now stands for purity, harmony, and holiness. If you see an Angel in red, it means the Angel is there to offer you wisdom and wise service. Green stands for healing and prosperity and, finally, purple in an indication of mercy.

11 Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of everyone were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures, and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

16 The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the color of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and work were as if it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted over them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the color of the terrible crystal stretched forth over their heads above.

23 And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and everyone had two, which covered on that side, their bodies.

28 As the appearance of the bow is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness roundabout. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard the voice of one that spoke.
